Inspection—and often biopsy—of the breathing tubes (bronchi) going to the lungs by means of a long tube inserted through the mouth or nose. The instrument usually used is a fiber-optic bronchoscope that is flexible and allows excellent visualization around corners. The procedure is often done on an outpatient basis after local anesthesia and sedation.
